Casualties of Armed Clashes in Libya January – March 2019

During the reporting period, a total of 682 casualties, including dead, wounded and prisoners, were reported as a result of armed clashes in various areas and cities of Libya. 72% of the victims were combatants, 493 casualties, while the civilian casualties were 189, including 7 children.

337 persons were killed (49% of the total), and 218 persons were injured (32%), while the rest, 127 persons were abducted or captured by the warring parties.

February was the most violent with 380 casualties, accounting for 56% of all casualties of the First Quarter of 2019. 41% of February’s casualties were killed, 154 casualties, caused mainly by the serious escalation of armed confrontations in the city of Derna.

Geographically, incidents were spread across the various regions of Libya; Derna reported about 29% of the total number of casualties of armed clashes, 195 casualties, among them 107 civilians including 2 children, due to armed clashes between forces loyal to Haftar and the Derna Protection Force; followed by Ubari with 164 casualties (26% of all casualties), caused by the armed clashes in the region between forces loyal to Haftar and the forces of GNA’s Southern Military Area.

Most of the casualties, 660 persons, 97% of the total for the First Quarter of 2019, were documented in only 7 cities, while the rest, 22 casualties (3%) were reported in 6 other cities and towns.
