Libya: Crimes of Abductions and Assassinations January – June 2019

During the First Half of 2019, 424 casualties of violent incidents in various cities in Libya were documented. The majority, 76% of the victims were civilians, 321 victims, and the percentage of victims from the police, security and military sectors was 14%, while 10% of the victims were not classified because of lack of identification. The victims of kidnappings and detentions accounted for 55% of the total number of victims, followed by victims of assassinations, including bombings, terrorist attacks and extrajudicial killings, which accounted for 34% of the total casualties.

June was the most violent month, accounting for a total of 135 victims, 32% of the total number of victims in the First Half of 2019.

Most victims, 73 percent of the total, were victims of crimes in 8 cities and regions of Libya, while the rest were distributed over 24 cities and towns. The city of Benghazi topped the list with 60 victims, half of whom were victims of extrajudicial assassinations or killings, followed by Sabha with 55 victims, two thirds of whom were victims of kidnappings.

32% of the victims, 134, were disappeared, to join the list of hundreds of victims of enforced disappearance from previous years, while 34% of the victims, 143, were killed.
