Introduce the United Nations human rights thematic mechanisms
The objective mechanisms of the United Nations consist of a number of special rapporteurs, independent experts or working groups appointed by the Human Rights Council to discuss specific types of human rights violations wherever they occur in the world. It is referred to as “objectivity”, in order to distinguish it from the country mechanisms designated by the aforementioned Human Rights Council (Majlis) to discuss human rights situations in specific countries.
Complaints procedures
The ability of individuals to complain, in an international arena, of the violation of their rights gives real meaning to the rights contained in human rights treaties. There are three main procedures for presenting complaints of violations of human rights treaty provisions to the human rights treaty bodies: individual complaints; Interstate complaints; And investigations.
Individual communications
There are nine (9) core international human rights treaties. Each of these treaties has created a “treaty body” (committee) of experts to monitor the implementation of the provisions of the treaty by its member states.
Treaty bodies (the Human Rights Committee, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the Committee against Torture, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Committee on Enforced Disappearances, the Committee on Migrant Workers, the Committee on Economic Rights Social and cultural rights, and the Committee on the Rights of the Child), under certain conditions, to consider individual complaints or communications from individuals.
Currently six (6) human rights treaty bodies (the Human Rights Committee, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the Committee against Torture, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Committee on Enforced Disappearances) are currently permitted.
